I never did mind the little things.
"The devil is in the details," a wise man once said. And indeed, Satan shows up all over the place. So does Jesus. Mostly on pieces of toast, fishsticks, and other food items. But I digress. Point is, it's all about going the extra mile. Getting the big stuff taken care of is easy. Create a new show lampooning Bill O'Reilly, no problem. Crush a few hundred bugs to make your OS more stable, done and done. The hard part is tweaking things to make something that's already pretty damn good just a tad better. Here's a few examples of those very sorts of things from the past 24 hours or so:
- The graphics people on the Colbert Report moved the "The" in "The Word" over to the right a bit because it was getting in the way of Herr Colbert's kopf. Wunderbar. It was bugging the fuck out of me. And while I wish I was kidding, I'm not... sadly not at all. (Screen grabs before and after here.)
- The Finder dweebs over at Apple added an "architecture" listing in the applications details when you're looking at them in column view in the new version of Tiger (that's version 10.4.3 for those of you playing at home). Sure, it doesn't do much now, but when we're all rocking out with Intel Inside, it'll be nice to know what an app was compiled for. Upgrade.
- The TiVo programmers finally got bored adding features to make content providers happy and decided to do something to help their users for a change. How nice. The new overlap protection feature in the new point release of the TiVo software allows you to avoid networks trying to lock you into their programming by shifting their shows start times around by a minute here and there. Good job TiVo. Keep it up, even though I know you won't.
Jon Stewart has definitely professed his love of TiVo on many occasions, and even though we're only in the third week of The Colbert Report, we've already gotten a nice little segment of Steven talking about setting up his Airport Express at the Colbert Compound. Exxxxcellent.

I wasn't too impressed with the two Colbert Report episodes I saw. Is it getting better?
